IFC Model Data Quality Checklist: 12 Items to Verify Before Delivery
IFC exchange failures are rarely due to format issues; they stem from data quality problems. This article outlines 12 actionable checks and common fixes to perform before delivery.
Geometry and Coordinates
- Has the offset between project origin and real-world coordinates been recorded to prevent coordinate drift on the receiving end?
- Duplicate geometry (same element exported twice) significantly increases file size and interferes with quantity takeoff.
- Check if the surface and Boolean operation results are correctly triangulated, verifying for broken faces or reversed normals.
- Ensure unit and precision settings are consistent. Mixing millimeters and meters is a common source of dimension errors.
Semantics and Attributes
- Does the component type naming follow the agreed classification system (e.g., by floor-system-type code)?
- Is the GUID stable? Repeated exports should not generate a new global unique identifier.
- Do the Key Property Sets (Psets) include required recipient fields such as fire rating, material, and vendor?
- Space structure integrity: Project → Site → Building → Floor → Space. Missing levels prevent the recipient from locating components.
Delivery and Verification
- IFC version and view definitions (e.g., IFC2x3 Coordination View 2.0 / IFC4 Reference View) are specified in the Delivery Instructions.
- Verify using receiving software from at least two different vendors; passing with a single vendor does not guarantee compatibility.
- File size and splitting strategy confirmed: deliver large models by floor or system.
- The delivery package includes model documentation, coordinate reference, attribute dictionary, and known issues list.
